The Maryland Public Information Act (PIA) gives the public a general right to have access to information about the affairs of government and the official acts of public officials and employees.  The PIA covers many types of records with varying requirements for disclosure.  Records of the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) that contain personal information are specifically controlled by the PIA, and disclosure of personal information is generally prohibited, with limited exceptions.  Other MVA records, including, but not limited to, business licensing records and procurement records, are also restricted under the PIA.

There are many MVA records and documents that are available to any applicant, immediately upon request.  A list of those immediately available documents can be found here​​.

Any requests for records or documents not on the list of immediately available documents must be accompanied by a signed and completed Request for Motor Vehicle Administration Records, DR-057.
